Gary Johnson, Woodturner was born on December 25, 1936, in Webster City, Iowa and has been a woodworking hobbyist for many years. He began to learn woodturning in 1991 and became a serious woodturner after retiring as an Engineering Manager for McDonnell Douglas in 1992. Most of Gary’s current pieces are constructed of laminated segmented stacked ring construction. This construction method is very conservative of wood and can result in a mosaic pattern through the use of contrasting woods. He has been developing this construction method since 1992. The shapes and patterns in Gary’s bowls and pots are inspired by American Indian baskets and pottery.
Gary is a member of the American Association of Woodturners, the Wood Turning Center, Woodturners of St Louis, and St. Louis Artists‚ Guild.
